  • How about this for a quick simple cure. If your car is damaged by an unlicensed/excluded driver the onus for the repair is on the registered owner. The offending vehicle is immediately impounded, at the owners cost, until the debt is satisfied. If the debt is not satisfied in a pre-determined time the vehicle is sold at public auction. Excess funds received from the auction go into a central pool and are used to satisfy debt for those vehicles damaged and the impounded vehicle does not achieve the require amount to satisfy the damage..i.e. a 50K vehicle causes damage worth 5K sells at auction for ,say, 20K then the extra 15K goes to the central pool. Hopefully this creates a significant pool of funds to protect aggrieved drivers. Thoughts?

I’m thinking the pick up that was coming to a stop at the red light blocked it from view but wow! That really came out of no where. • 6:45. The truck was "turtled". I invented that word. Vehicle turned over and can't get upright. Odds are the car did not signal it was making a left turn. So the truck driver thought it was clear to pass, even thought it was not marked for passing. I had a similar situation to happen to me on a snow covered road that WAS marked for passing. I thought the car was just going slow because the snow. I decided to pass the car. I was about 10 feet away from it when suddenly it turned left to a driveway. I dogged it with no contact and brought my car back onto the road. I was going under the speed limit as well. Not going fast like the truck was in this video.

What did the SUV paste on the other car? .. With reading it all, I get what you mean to say. I try to make my posts language correct. This post took me 20 minutes. • 6:02 Totaled? The collision didn't seem that direct. You would think a reinforced structure would hold up better and not cost 16 grand for repairs. Maybe the reinforced part did hold up but everything else collapsed. Built for the person to survive. Not the vehicle. And,,, to make you buy another truck/car.

    • @BILL S Oh I see. I guess I'll KISS "Keep it simple, stupid" and just be the only driver on my policy. Effing insurance companies love to make things confusing. You should see what they've done to my house insurance!

      llOOII llOOIIllOOII llOOIIIl y a 2 mois
    • @llOOII llOOII Well, the exclusion would typically be done by you. You would tell the insurance company that a certain person is to be excluded from coverage for your vehicle. So if you haven't done that, then everything is normal and your friend is covered. The insurance company may also tell you that they want you to exclude a driver, if the driver is known to them to be high risk. Generally excluding a driver gets you better rates. The rules vary state to state. I think NY does not even allow exclusions.

      BILL SBILL SIl y a 2 mois
    • @BILL S What if it isn't your brother or any family member, but instead a friend?

      llOOII llOOIIllOOII llOOIIIl y a 2 mois
    • @llOOII llOOII Yes, if I let my brother drive my car he is covered. That's normal. However, if my brother is a terrible driver, such that the insurance company would raise my rates a lot to include him, then he can be specifically excluded from the policy. Then he is an "excluded driver".

      BILL SBILL SIl y a 2 mois
    • @BILL S I haven't had to deal with this since I was a tad, and that was a long time ago. Back in the Dark Ages, say me & a friend went on a road trip in my car. The way it was then, if I wanted to zone out and let him drive, he was covered. I take it the Insurance Copmanies have changed all that now? Never an issue any more since I only drive my own vehicle or a rental. But even there, my Insurance covers me in a rental.

  • In the first clip, surely it is illegal to drive without insurance? The second he said that you should have called the police.

    Dominic SmithDominic SmithIl y a 2 mois
    • @Dominic Smith If the brother had access to the owner's keys and lived in the house with him, though, it's unlikely the police will consider the vehicle "stolen." This will also require the owner to be willing to press charges against his own brother. In my experience, at least in the U.S., it's rare that vehicles taken without permission by people living in the same household as the owner are considered "thefts" for the purpose of criminal charges. And regardless, the vehicle still wouldn't be insured in that case, and the person who was hit would (in Texas) get their car fixed through their Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage with a deductible of $250, rather than their collision coverage, which may have a higher deductible.

      Jonathan KleinowJonathan KleinowIl y a 2 mois
    • @Jonathan Kleinow Jonathan, I think we have both said the same thing here. If the guy took his brothers car without permission and wasn't insured to drive it, then he was committing a crime. He could have been charged with theft, driving without insurance and criminal damage for both the other car and his brothers, which is why I suggested that the police should have been called. In the UK, Car Insurance covers the driver and any specifically named other individuals, whose driving history must be disclosed to the insurance company so the premium can be calculated. Generally however, if you have what is known as a Fully Comprehensive Policy for your own car, then you are covered for third party damage if you are driving someone else's car. This means that if you have an 'at fault' accident in a car not specifically covered by the policy, any damages to the car you hit will be covered by the insurance company, but not damages to the car you are driving. There are policies available that insure you to drive ANY car, but these are more expensive. Also, in the UK if an uninsured driver hits you then an organisation called the Motor Insurance Bureau (set up by the industry,) steps in and covers all the costs of repairing or replacing your car.

    • In some states, you can "exclude" certain people from the policy. Normally, your policy covers anyone living in your household if they are driving your car, and you need to list all of them on your insurance. So in this scenario, my guess is the driver lives with the owner, but the driver's record is so bad that it would make the owner's policy very expensive. The owner has to either list the driver on the policy or sign an exclusion form, saying that, if that person is involved in an accident while driving the truck, the insurance won't provide coverage. If the owner of the truck signed that form, then he should never have let his brother drive the truck.
